Initial Ideas

Idea 1 – Unity Open World Game

  • What is the product or Specialism?

I would do Programming, just because that’s the path I want to excel down, and I’ll be using this Unit to further develop my programming skills in Unity using C# – I want to use C# because I feel like it would build up my knowledge of programming more since I’m only just understanding so much more of it, but I do see a negative in using C# as there is other programming languages out there like C++ which learning would expand my programming knowledge even more, but the positives of using Unity and C# for this project is that I’m comfortable with using it, which is what I really want since this is my final project, another thing is there is also a lot of Indie studios which use Unity as well so it’s more to add to my portfolio which would cater towards those studios.

  • What could you create?

I would create an open world adventure game using Unity, the adventure game would have similar gameplay to Breath Of The Wild, allowing you to explore a huge land full of enemies to fight and items to collect, there won’t really be a goal to this game, as it would just aim to look visually impressive, I want to use this project to work on my lighting in games and my visual effects like particles and a weather system, I would like to also work on enemies and enemy AI, since I’ve not touched AI much anymore. This open world game would try and captivate the player with the stunning graphics (which i’ll try to achieve) The game will most likely be a mix of low poly and realistic, with all the models being low poly and made by myself and then all of the lighting being realistic.

  • What could you include?

In this game I would include lots of different things you would usually see in an open world adventure game, like riding a horse, chopping down a tree, climbing rocks, fighting enemies, cooking food and so on, I would love this open world to be similar to breath of the wild where there is all these different beautiful landscapes and a mix of towns and small villages along with very nice atmospheric music

  • What style?

The style I would go for would be Low Poly, but I would also do some of the models like in Breath Of The Wild, I would also work on some cell shading lighting for the game. For the models I would like to model them myself, so I think I can probably do something like PS2-Style models, but I won’t be able to do anything realistic, since I don’t want modelling to take up all of my time.

  • What Colours?386

I want to use lots of greens and blues in this game to show the nature, but it really depends on what part of the overworld you’re on because there could be a snow village or there could be a forest, or there could be a desert, it all changes.

  • What mechanics?

There would be many mechanics in this game to allow the player to explore, for example, there could be fire making, tree climbing, tree cutting, enemy combat etc.

What do I like about this idea?

I like this idea because, if I’m able to do it right and if I’m able to make an open world exploring game, it would show my world design skills as I would have to do alot of planning on how the world looks, and it would also look very good on my portfolio, if I make a game like this, the screenshots I make to present it would all be very pretty looking since my main focus of making this game would be the visuals.

What don’t I like about this idea?

But- My main focus being the visuals would mean a lot more 3D modelling, which is something which I’m not great at, which could make my final project look bad, it would be a lot of work on the visuals and not enough work on the gameplay and programming of the game, so I feel if I do something like this, it wouldn’t be a good final project.

Idea 2 – Unity Flying Game

I would create an open world flying adventure game using Unity which allows you to explore a vast sky full of enemies to fight and a landscape to fly over, the goal of the game is to survive waves of enemies, or missions to get to a certain position on the map to complete it, but I would also aim to make it look visually impressive, I want to use this project to work on my lighting in games and my visual effects like particles and a weather system, I would like to also work on enemies and enemy AI, since I’ve not touched AI much anymore. This game would be very challenging and try to captivate the player with the stunning graphics and artwork (which i’ll try to achieve) The game will most likely be a mix of low poly and realistic, with all the models being low poly and made by myself and then all of the lighting being realistic.

  • What could you include?

I want to include a dragon which the player is who can fly across a huge sky level, this dragon needs animations, and the reason why I picked a dragon is they’re a lot easier to animate than a human for example, since a dragons animation would only be flapping it’s wings.

I’ll be animating in Maya and doing the 3D model in either Maya or Blender, but to do this I would need some side and front illustrations of the dragon. I don’t want this to take up too much of my time, since I only have limited time and I need to make a good game since I’m focusing on Programming and not 3D modelling.
Another thing I would include is enemies with enemy AI, so the enemies would follow and shoot at you, and to include this I would also need to make a lot of magic visual effects.
I would also include a mission system, with a missions (chapter) screen, so there could be a small story to go along with it.
Near the end of my production, if my game is turning out nicely, I was considering commissioning a voice actor, to read out a script about the story of the game for the starting cut scene, so I can make the game seem as complete and polished as I can within my time frame.
For this game I would also need music and Sound FX which I’m half considering doing myself, and half considering going to GameSounds.xyz for, but that all depends on how well I am with time.

  • What style?

Spyro, PS1 (1998)

I have quite a few ideas on the style that I want this game to be, the first idea for a style would be similar to Spyro, since the original Spyro games are quite low poly, so it wouldn’t be a problem for me to simulate that style, but I also really love the style of early PS2 games like Ace Combat

  • What Colours?

The colours I want to use in my games are reds and blacks, similar to the idea below.
I love the use of red and black together since it looks very chaotic, which is the theme after-all. I would also use neutral colours as well, just so you can tell where everything is, the colour pallet was also inspired by Drakengard.

  • What mechanics?

The mechanics which I want in this game is obviously, a realistic feeling flying system, which Drakengard achieved, putting weight on the dragon making flying the dragon part of the challenge of the game, I really want my game to work with a controller since I want my game to feel like a proper game, and I want my game to have terrifying enemies with enemy AI.
Another thing which I would love in my game is along with sky flying missions, I also want there to be ground missions, where the player, as a dragon, can rain fire on enemies which are much smaller than themself.
I would also love huge enemies, similar to the enemies in Shadow of the colossus.

I like this idea the best

What do I like about this idea?

I like this idea quite a bit since it involves not too much 3D modelling and it allows me to focus on my programming, it’s quite an open idea as well which would allow me to add things as I go along, which is what I done for my last project which allowed me to work at a fast pace.

What don’t I like about this idea?

I like pretty much everything about this idea, which is good, I don’t know how I feel about the 3D modelling though, since I feel like that would be quite a challenge for me to model and animate a dragon.

Idea 3 – Chaotic Art

  • What is the product or Specialism?

I would do Art, even though this isn’t the path I want to go down, I feel my portfolio needs bigger art pieces so I’ll use this Unit to develop some concept art and final art pieces which can be displayed on the art section of my portfolio.

  • What could you create?

For this I would create some sort of art piece which shows chaos clearly, I would want to

flat,550x550,075,f.u2
Red Sun Samurai Poster, Matteo Tosin

do some landscape which illustrates a world riddled with chaos and disaster, and I would want it to be presented on a huge frame or scroll, this is so it would fit with the style I am planning to have for this piece, since I want it to be very traditional.
My piece would be done both in Photoshop and hand painted, just so I can figure out which one I like more.

  • What could you include?

I want to include a red sky with black silhouettes of chaos and war, I would want these black silhouettes to look like cut out paper, the page would be portrait, and I want it to be really long to show all the little details of war, with the black silhouettes fading into normal colours without any black silhouettes to show different layers of the painting

  • What style?

I want this to be in the style of Japanese scroll art, since I feel that art form is so beautiful, I would want to try and do something as similar to traditional scroll art as I can if I’m working on Photoshop, I would try

red-sun-samurai-nikita-abakumov

and look for ink brushes and make sure I’m painting on the right resolution so I can print it right and make the print look like an actual scroll. What I could do is get scroll paper and print directly onto that.

  • What Colours?

The colours I would like to use for this piece will be mainly black and red, the reason for this is because I love the style of the black and red illustrations I see on Japanese samurai art pieces, and since I’ll be doing a war piece, it would make sense for it to be black and red

What do I like about this idea?

I love the style, and the fact that I want to make this look traditional and have it on a scroll, I got this idea from some posters I brought at a convention which I really liked the look of, this artist printed some traditional looking art on scroll paper, and it looked real, I really liked that and I wanted to do it myself with this project, I feel like I could produce something really pretty doing this.

What don’t I like about this idea?

I don’t like how I’m limited to colours in a way, it would look really nice at the end if I stick to red and black colours, but that means I can’t do nice shading or much to do with colour, so it would be a slight challenge to get everything to look nice if I’ve only got silhouettes to use

Final Idea – Order & Chaos

  • Look, Style & Colour Scheme.

-Look

The look of the game would be low-poly, but I would also make use of a Unity asset which I brought which I have the licence to use which can make the lights in Unity look so much nicer and more realistic, it is a perfect asset to use for an open world game like one I’m planning to make, the asset is called Aura 2. With this asset, I can make the sky look like it’s been raining, or snowing, or I can make it look like you’re in a forest or in a desert and it’s all down to the fog and the lights, which I find really cool. I also want the camera to slowly follow the player, but if they want to make a sharp turn, they would have to press a button to quickly adjust the cameras rotation.

-Style

I don’t want the style of my game to be too cartoony, since it really doesn’t fit in with the chaotic and dark theme which we are given, the pictures of spyro which I am using are simply for some body proportions which I can reference in my concept art, but I’m thinking of using a more serious but low poly style to make my games models. I really love the paper craft looking dragons which I’ve saved to the pinterest board below.

-Colour Scheme

The colour scheme I am using for my final game would be a mostly red colour scheme with lots of dark colours, just to show how much chaos the actual world is in, I’ve wanted to make this game with a red sky, which you see a lot in horror illustrations so I feel like the colour scheme of red and black would fit perfect with this game, I made a colour scheme to use for my project.
But if I try this colour scheme in the game and I don’t like it, I may have to adjust it.

  • Subject matter. (What it’s about)

My game would be about flying around in a vast open sky with clouds and a weather system and a huge land below them (Which they can’t land on in sky missions) You have to get to the objective, destroying the enemies on the way there.
The game is more about making a dragons flight feel more realistic, with weight and easy controls.

  • Mechanic if applicable.

The mechanics I’ll have in this game is I’ll have a mechanic where the dragon can shoot fire balls to attack enemies, I want to make it so the player can lock onto enemies as well as I feel like that is a very important thing to have in a flying mission, but I wouldn’t have the flying controls on the ground missions though.

  • Story if applicable

I was thinking that dragons and humans are at war, since dragons would’ve appeared out of nowhere in the human world, causing chaos, because that is all that they know, and the humans are trying to make the earth in order again, and to do that they need to destroy these mysterious dragons which have just appeared in the world
