  • What comes to mind when I first saw these words?

When I first saw the theme of ‘Order & Chaos’ I immedietly thought of war, and the military, I also broke it into two so I could potentially have two different themes and I could pick from them.
The reason I thought of war and the military is because war is chaos, innocent people dying for a government cause, they’re not even fighting for their own true cause, but they’re trying to protect their country, and the military is order, like when they’re marching as a troop in a parade, they’re all in time with each other, and everything feels orderly and neat, orderly soldiers fighting a chaotic war is what I initally brought away from this.

When I further inspected these words, I had a few more things come to mind, for example, I thought of puzzle games, since a lot of them seem to have a lot of ordering in them, like those parking games, where you have to move cars out of the way to get out of the parking lot, that’s ordering cars which are parked in a chaotic position.

I also thought of games like Tetris, Rez and Cut The Rope, since these all tick the boxes for either being orderly, chaotic, or both.
If I hadn’t further looked into this I wouldn’t have thought much of the theme, and brought around a more unique idea.

  • How this research may be useful to know

Knowing these definitions will help me with understanding the different, and true definitions of these words, which in turn will help me come up with new ideas if there is a definition which I didn’t know about, which there wasn’t, so I already knew what the words meant.

  • Why do I like this theme?

I like this theme a lot becuase I feel like theres lots of things which could be done with it, you could split the theme into two seperate words, or you could keep them together, it’s a fun theme to do since it is so broad.

  • Why don’t I like this theme?

There is nothing which I don’t like with the theme since it’s perfect for me, but I’m not sure about other people.
I feel like the 3D modellers would struggle with this theme since, for example, if they’re building a house, they could have a tidy house, with everything in order. But they could also have a messy house, which could represent chaos.
I feel like making a messy looking house would be difficult because of all the little details which would be in it, like dust and shattered glass.
For an artist, this would be alright, they could create a charatcer looks chaotic, or one which could have a ‘chaotic’ personality, and they could do the opposite for order.
But they could do a landscape which is in rubbles from a war, or some sort of illustrative peice.
I’m happy that I’ll be doing the programming for this theme since lots of ideas come to mind when thinking of an orderly or chaotic game.

  • How can I take this and expand upon it?

I could take this research and expand it by looking into words which are similar, or words which have the same meaning and finding out about those words by using a thesaurus.

Word Association –

For my word association task, I started with the initial word of ‘Order’ and ‘Chaos’ and from those words, I thought of other words, and then I thought of other words from those words, I done this 10 times, twice for each word to give me a large array of different words.

  • What came to mind when I first done this task?

At first, I thought word association wasn’t useful at all, I never previously got much out of it, since it’s words which link to words, which never really have much relation to the first word when you look back from the last, for example, you wouldn’t really see the word ‘Gold’ and think that the word ‘Order’ was derived from it.

  • What do I think now when I look back at the word association?

Now, after doing the word association I see how useful it was, since beforehand, I would’ve never thought of puzzle games when I hear Order and Chaos, but from doing the word association for Order, I had come up with Puzzle, which made me re-think what I initially had in my head for my final idea.
I done 20 word associations in total for each word, in chunks of 10.
I found it useful to do 2 word associations for each word since that allowed me to look into the ‘Puzzle’ aspect for Order aswell as whatever else I looked into, I did this for Chaos aswell, doing word association for the ‘Disasterous’ aspect of Chaos and the ‘Crazy’ aspect of chaos.

  • How this research is useful to know?

This is useful because I can also use some of these words on my mind map, and I can also use them to help me come up with ideas for what I want my final project to be, it helps me create an image in my head for what I want to do later on.

  • How can I take this and expand upon it?

I can take the words from this research and peice them together to make my own chaotic/orderly game. Doing this research makes it so my end product would be unique, since I have so many words to work with.

Mind Map –

For my mind map, I began exploring the meaning of order and chaos in more detail, similar to my word association above, I began writing down words which relate to order and chaos to help me out with my research.

Order & Chaos - Mind Map

  • What came to mind when I first done this task?

I had lots of ideas when I first started this task, so I put them all down on the mind map, I explored many different ideas and words which linked to order and chaos, and I felt like I had enough words on there, there was plenty of words to pick from, all which were unique.
I also used a dictionary and a thesaurus to help me with picking out these words.

  • What do I think now when I look back at the mind map?

Now I look at this mind map, I know that I could add so many more words, and so I did that.

Order & Chaos - Mind Map (1)
The good thing about going back to my work and adding things is that I’m taking it on with a new mindset which was different from the one that I had when I was making this mind map, so I have so many more ideas.

  • How this research is useful to know?

I feel like this is very helpful and important to helping me with planning my research since I don’t have to just stick to the words ‘Order’ & ‘Chaos’ and I could branch off into the words which are link to those in this mind map.

  • How can I take this and expand upon it?

I could take the words which I got from this mind map and do further research into them, or I could take a singular word and do word association on that, and find a more unique word.

Initial Order & Chaos Research –

To begin my research, I made a few board on Pinterest where I would be collecting images for the theme, organizing it like this will help me see the contrast between the two once I’ve added pins to it.

374

Rage (Chaos)

I picked ‘Rage’ since I feel like that is a word which related mostly to the Chaos theme, there is a lot which you can do with this word. Looking through this Pinterest board you can mostly see fire, which is what rage is like, a burning desire to achieve something, this board conveys emotions of anger, greed, bloodlust and insanity, which is all crammed into the one word ‘Rage’ the colours which are mostly seen on this board are Reds, Oranges and Yellows, which are the colours of a fire.
This theme may be hard for 3D modelers to convey without the use of some sort of particle effects and strong stylistic expressions on the 3D model, if they’re not 3D modeling a human or character, it would be even harder since they need to think of how they can express rage whilst not having anything to express it on. This theme would be easy for artists since they just need to make some sort of art work or character illustration with a strong red colour pallet. This theme could be very creative for the programmers since they could use particle effects and sound effects.

The pros this word is there is a lot you can do with it, it’s scary and it’s unpredictable, rage could happen to someone out of the blue, if they have some sort of disorder, or it could happen when you’re irritated, angry or upset, but I feel like it really does truly represent the word ‘Chaos’
The cons of this word is that it’s mostly shown with fire and shouting, I don’t have any images on here which show pent up rage which is kept within a person.

Magic, Warlords & Dragons (Chaos)

Secondary Research –

Primary Research –

I picked these three words and made them into a single board since I believe these are the types of characters and abilities you would see in a game which is based around the word chaos, this is useful since it could help me with my character design later on when I make my character for the game.
Bright colours are seen on this Pinterest board mostly, but with a good amount of neutral colours, the bright colours are usually the magic pictures I’ve collected with different types of attacks using bright colours to signify what the magic was made from, the neutral colours are from the dragons and the warlords since they’re wearing armor or are generally bland colours
This board doesn’t convey much emotion, but I would mostly say this board represents the previous board – rage, since magic, dragons and warlords are fierce and deadly.
Doing this theme on the board would be beneficial for 3D modelers, since they could 3D model a dragon, or a war lord, they wouldn’t be able to do particle effects though unless they bring the model into a game engine. This theme would be perfect for an Artist, since they could draw character designs for dragons or warlords, and they can use magic, which they can reference from the images on this board. This theme would be alright for a programmer, since they can use the game engine they’re using to make the magic effects into particle effects, and they could make the magic look really cool.

The pros of this board is that I can use it to help with my character and magic design that I do in my game if I were to make a fantasy style game with dragons, warlords and/or magic. This board has a good few images which would be helpful for inspiration later on in development
The cons of this board is that I feel I should’ve split it up into Dragons & Warlords and have Magic by itself.

Destruction (Chaos)

Secondary Research –

Primary Research –

I picked Destruction since that is what I feel like would happen a lot in a world full of chaos, this is very useful if I were to model a world for my character and I need some destruction and ruins to blend in with my chaos, it really shows that the world is in grave danger and all the beautiful things have been destroyed.
The colours on this Pinterest board which are seen the most are surprisingly Green, with some other natural colours, the green is because with destruction and age, moss has started to grow in these pictures, this type of destruction would’ve been done ages ago, but there is also some pins on the board which is more recent destruction.
These pictures convey a lot of emotions just looking at them, you would think that these places are very eerie and sad, but their last minutes of standing could’ve been full of chaos riddled screams as the building was blown up (just an example)
This theme would benefit a 3D modeller a great amount since they’re able to 3D model buildings and destruction and then put it into a game engine and set the lighting and mood of the model. This theme would benefit an artist because they would be able to draw a landscape art piece depicting a ruined land, which was once in the middle of a horrible raging war, or in the middle of a huge rain of bombs. This would be a hard theme for a programmer to implement into their game, they could make particles and shaders showing destruction though.

The pros of this theme is that it is very good for 3D modelers and artists, since so much can be done with the destruction theme, they could create really beautiful scenes and landscapes, but they would have to be very detailed, and the lighting on these may be hard to achieve, so the Artists may have to use a 3D model and some lighting to help them out, but with the 3D modelers they just need to model the theme.
The cons is that it is so detailed so it may take ages and in the end it may not look that great if it looks too destroyed, another con with this is that it would be hard for a programmer to implement into their game without eating up at the memory.

Bloodshed (Chaos)

Secondary Research –

Primary Research –

I picked this theme because violence and war links to bloodshed I feel like bloodshed and blood is a theme which perfectly fits inside of chaos, since its chaotic and gory, this theme is something really exciting to work on and you can do so much with it.
The colours which are mostly seen in this pinterest board is red, which is obvious, but there is a lot of darker tones as well in these images, the colours tie in very well with the emotions which these images convey, red is usually linked to rage and anger, so that is what I feel these images convey. This theme would benefit an artist greatly, since they could draw a landscape and paint it with a red colour pallet but only stick to one colour with different tones of that colour to make everything more interesting. This theme wouldn’t be so great for 3D modelers since there isn’t a lot they can model unless they go more to the gore side and 3D model some guts and gore. This theme isn’t that bad for programmers since they could make a particle effect which is blood, or a shader which is a blood moon or sun and make it really detailed and then use that, another thing programmers can do is they can change the fog in their game to be red or change the lighting in their scene to be red.

The pros of this theme is it is very chaotic and gory, and you could have a lot of fun with this theme if you do something like a hack and slash game, or some sort of gory illustration, it fits perfectly in with the Chaos theme.
The cons of this theme is that it would be harder for the 3D modelers to do, and you’re very limited on colours since you have to just stick to dark colours and red colours

Hell (Chaos)

Secondary Research –

Primary Research –

I picked the word ‘Hell’ since, if I were to believe in religion, hell is full of chaos, fire, and disorganized suffering everywhere, all the time, it’s something fun to work on since it’s similar to the bloodshed theme, where everything is dark and gloomy. The colours which are mostly seen on this art work which I’ve found are browns, oranges reds and dark neutral colours, this is because hell is a dark place full of fire, and these pictures show that very well, the emotions which are shown in these illustrations are mostly rage, and anger, and sometimes, sadness, or no emotions at all.
This theme would benefit an artist since they could draw a demon character, or they could draw a castle surrounded by dark substance, they could lower the levels on their drawings to make them seem very scary. This theme would benefit a 3D modeler since there is a lot you can model relating to hell, like you could model an animal, a demon, a chair covered in skulls, a skull, a castle, and all you have to do to make it look like its in hell is add some fire and red ambiance. This would be slightly more challenging for a programmer, since there isn’t anything I can think that a programmer can do to relate to hell.

The pros of this theme is it can be very artistic, you could also blend it in with the theme of heaven and show Order and Chaos through the use of angels and demons, you could do something very beautiful by doing this theme.
The cons of this theme is if you’re an atheist (like myself) there is some research you may have to do toward this theme to make sure you get it right, and you don’t want to do anything that may offend someone who is a christian, or any religion.

Sanity/Insanity (Chaos)

Military (Order)

Heaven (Order)

Knighthood (Order)

Royalty (Order)
